What is Hurling?

Hurling is a traditional Irish sport that dates back over 3,000 years. It's played with a small, hard ball called a sliotar and a curved stick called a hurley. Hurling is renowned for its fast-paced action, physicality, and skillful play. It holds a special place in Irish culture and is considered one of the fastest field sports in the world.

Basic Rules

In hurling, the objective is to score points by striking the sliotar between the opponent's goalposts. A goal, worth three points, is scored when the sliotar enters the goal net below the crossbar, while a point is scored when the sliotar is struck over the crossbar. Players can carry the sliotar in their hurley, pass it to teammates, and engage in physical contests to gain possession.

Equipment Needed

To play hurling, you'll need a few essential pieces of equipment:
  • Hurley: A curved stick used to strike the sliotar.
  • Sliotar: A small, hard ball.
  • Helmet: Essential for safety, helmets are worn by all players to protect against head injuries.
  • Cleats: Sturdy footwear with good grip is important for traction on the field.
  • Optional equipment includes gloves, shin guards, or other protective gear.
